The Pitfalls of Store Coupons and Saving Money

Anyone out there read The Minimalist's blog?

It's really interesting how they chose to walk away from all their old life and start a more simple life.

Something I think many of us crave these days, at least a tiny bit.

Go check out their recent post Fool Price.

This one hit home with me. I've recently noticed how store coupons get me to spend money I wouldn't have spend otherwise.

Like 20% off at Barnes and Noble. Oh. I can't let that go to waste!

And 40% off one item at Michael's. Who doesn't need another craft supply. I don't!

And even take $5 off a $15 purchase at Bye Bye Baby. I'm sure Tater needs something. Maybe not.

And my husband's favorite is the buy 2 for $4 or $2.44 each. He can't resist. But maybe we didn't need 2.

Now I'm not saying that all coupons are bad. If I'm actually waiting for a book or magazine that I would buy otherwise, then a coupon is awesome. It's just that found I was buying something just for the sake of saving 20%.

Oh...those sneaky little retailers. They are so good at getting into our wallets. But I'm trying to be more mindful of my purchases these days.

How about you? Trying to live a more simple life? Buy less stuff? Spend less money?

Oh yeah. Why the photo up above? Because if I learn to live with less and therefore spend less, then one day maybe I can look at a view like this from my house in San Diego.
